At some point birthdays are old hat, unless you’re a country, and about to celebrate 200 years of independence. That, my friend, is cause to break out the piñatas and party hats and dance in the streets.
While Mexico’s bicentennial falls on September 16, there are parties planned all year long. In March the Mexico Cup Regatta took over the beautiful Riviera Nayarit. Coming right up is the Primer Festival Gastronómico de la Ciudad de México, a delicious festival involving 155 restaurants in Mexico City, which allows visitors to get a real taste for the region.
In May, Casa Dragones celebrated our spirit of independence with a spectacular party at the Museo de la Ciudad. In July Expo Parque Bicentenario opens in Guanajuato; the World’s Fair-style expo will take over 245 acres of the region. The penultimate celebration of independence – perhaps the most fitting – is the opening of the Arco del Bicentenario monument along the Paseo de la Reforma, in Mexico City.
Celebration of Mexico’s vibrant heritage certainly isn’t relegated to the country: Check out fetes in Calgary and San Francisco, among others. Viva Mexico!
