Boasting strong political and cultural ties, not to mention gorgeous vistas and loyal locals, San Miguel de Allende is a modern town with an old soul. Its treasures were recently recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which designated San Miguel a World Heritage Site in 2008.
UNESCO praised the cultural exchange between Spaniards, Creoles and Amerindians, and the city’s stunning architecture, an integration of styles based on a 16th century urban layout, with notable religious monuments like the Gothic Parroquia cathedral. Landmarks aside, San Miguel has seen plenty of change in its history, beginning with its name—which hopefully has been written in pencil in the world’s address books: Founded as San Miguel Viejo in 1542 by Father Juan de San Miguel, a Franciscan missionary born in Spain, the settlement later became known as San Miguel el Grande. After General Ignacio Allende led a battle in the Mexican War of Independence, the city was renamed in his honor. But, as they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. San Miguel remains an elegant town with a bold spirit and Casa Dragones is proud to call it home.
