DF: Art World Power Player

These days it’s as easy to bump into Damien Hirst or Ed Ruscha in Mexico City as it is on Madison Avenue. A bevy of contemporary galleries and the annual Zona Maco art fair have put the city on the international art map. Thanks to fairs like Maco, and La Colección Jumex, the largest private collection of contemporary art in Latin America, cosmopolitans have flocked to Mexico City for a look at the Next Big Thing. There are a number of locals to keep your eye on: multimedia artist Carlos Amorales has shown at Tate Modern and the Museum of Modern Art; Julieta Aranda, whose multimedia works map time intervals; Gustavo Artigas mixes Dada with disaster; tattoo artist Dr Lakra shows at the influential Saatchi Gallery; and Mexico City-based sculptor and installation artist Damián Ortega explores regional culture with site-specific works. The next time you pick up Art in America, consider a trip to this happening city.
