Huichol Yarn Paintings

Take a close look at the vibrant, psychedelic images in Huichol folk paintings, and you might feel like you’ve had one tequila too many. Beyond the brilliant color in these works are deep religious beliefs and ties to the earth. The shamanistic Huichol, or Wixáritari, a pre-Hispanic culture, is mostly dotted around the Sierra Madres, while many have migrated throughout the country. They’re sustained in spirit by earthy divinities, like corn, tobacco and deer.

The colorful works are deeply religious, even though they might strike some as a relic from some long-ago hallucinatory experience.
