LA CASA DRAGONES: A HISTORIC AND ENCHANTING JEWEL IN SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE
Featured in AD Magazine, by Diona Garrido • January 26, 2024
This spectacular residence in San Miguel de Allende has been reimagined as a sanctuary honoring its history and Mexico’s quintessential spirit: tequila. La Casa Dragones stands as one of the country’s most beautiful gems.
On one of San Miguel de Allende’s cobblestone streets rises a centuries-old dragon. It emerges among colonial structures that, if they could speak, would lack the words to tell their many stories. Yet this is not a scaly, fearsome dragon, but rather an ode to Mexican design and the creatives behind it; it does not breathe fire, but history; it does not overpower, but instead welcomes innovation, adapting it to the town’s classical style.
We are speaking of La Casa Dragones, a space beloved by enthusiasts of design and architecture, as well as those committed to preserving historic properties. This is, after all, the essence of contemporary architecture: safeguarding heritage by giving it new purpose—one that can be shared and appreciated by the community.
A Space with History
San Miguel de Allende needs no introduction. It is one of Mexico’s most important colonial cities, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and named the world’s best small city. Yet it is also home to a magnificent dragon, symbolically embodied in this fascinating house, whose story exceeds all expectations.
The building dates back to 1671, when it served as one of the area’s most important stables, housing the elite cavalry squadron of the ruling class. Few were granted entry, but those who were could fully appreciate the strength and security offered by its imposing walls. During the War of Independence, it also served as both refuge and home, steeped in stories and anecdotes that could never fully be told. After many years functioning as a kind of barracks, it was eventually abandoned and fell into disrepair.
In the 20th century, the property underwent its first restoration; however, it was not until 2022 that the transformation that truly captivated us all took place. One might say the dragon was reborn—stronger, prouder, and more formidable than ever. It reemerged with a completely renewed aesthetic while preserving its essence as a site of historical and architectural significance within a uniquely special community.
La Casa Dragones pays tribute to its current resident: the tequila of the same name. This spirit not only embodies Mexican heritage as a privilege, but also moves gracefully through waves of flavor, craftsmanship, and meticulous production rarely seen. It is not a mass-produced tequila meant simply to be sold and consumed; rather, it is a nearly sacred ritual that begins in the agave fields and culminates on the palate. From this, we can understand the house as a true symbol of tequila—carrying an independent, resilient spirit and serving as a guardian of tradition.
