CASA DRAGONES RECEIVES A NEW DISTINCTION—THIS TIME IN ARCHITECTURE
Featured in Robb Report, by Isabel Leal • February 20, 2024
One might easily imagine Casa Dragones receiving countless accolades for its extraordinary tequila expressions. However, this time, the recognition goes beyond the spirit itself—highlighting its dedication to detail and excellence in the realm of architecture.
More specifically, this distinction celebrates the home of the tequila: La Casa Dragones, located in San Miguel de Allende, which received an award at the Créateurs Design Awards in the category of Best Hospitality Project in Interior Design.
These awards aim to recognize outstanding achievements across architecture, interior design, product design, photography, journalism, and curation. La Casa Dragones was honored for its meticulous interior design, its cultural significance, and its transformation into a symbol of Mexican heritage.
Originally a 17th-century stable, the property once housed the elite Dragones cavalry. A thoughtful restoration has resulted in a harmonious balance between past and present.
In 2009, La Casa Dragones first opened its doors as an elegant residence designed for tastings and special events. Following a subsequent renovation, it reopened in 2023 as an exhibition space showcasing some of the most significant elements of Mexico’s Bajío region, along with an expanded collection of Mexican design pieces curated by Bertha González Nieves—co-founder and CEO of Tequila Casa Dragones—in collaboration with curator Ana Elena Mallet and Raúl Cabra.
The renovation was led by Will Meyer of the New York–based design studio Meyer Davis, in collaboration with local architect Marco Martínez del Valle.
Héctor Esrawe was responsible for creating a bespoke lighting installation for the space—titled Solsticio—which anchors the three-level staircase. The piece is inspired by his renowned Parábola series, and he also designed the custom seating featured in the home’s bar.
At The Obsidian Bar, where tequila tastings take place, guests encounter a striking jewel intimately connected to its terroir, clad in obsidian—an iconic stone sourced directly from agave fields.
A number of distinguished names further contribute to the excellence of La Casa Dragones, including Caralarga, Daniel Couttolenc, Angela Damman, Trine Ellitsgaard, Piedra Fuego, Caterina Moretti, Citlalli Parra, Taller Experimental de Cerámica, Aldo Álvarez Tostado, and Rafael Weber, among others.
La Casa Dragones is destined to showcase the very best of Mexico—from tequila to art, craftsmanship, and design.
