CREATIVE TIME RETURNS TO ROCKAWAY BEACH

For one afternoon, Rockaway Beach became an open-air studio as seven artist teams built works in sand before an audience of neighbors and beachgoers.

Creative Time’s Sandcastle Competition returned to the Rockaways on September 13 for the first time since 2013.

Across the shoreline, seven artist teams worked in full public view: Anthony Akinbola; Canal Street Research Association; Marianna Simnett and Eliza Douglas; Chiffon Thomas and Victoria Martinez; Dean Millien; Rachel Rossin; and Gabriela Ruiz.

Waris Ahluwalia, Jodi Davis, Michi Jigarjian, Anne Pasternak, Pedro Reyes and Julio Torres served on the judging panel, with Gold, Silver and Bronze Shovels marking the afternoon’s awards.

Following the awards, guests gathered at The Rockaway Hotel for a Benefit Bash hosted by Michi Jigarjian and the hotel, with music by DJ Maya Margarita. A Yuzuco x Casa Dragones Margarita was served during the evening, which raised support for Creative Time’s public art programming.

Since 1974, Creative Time has commissioned artists to make work beyond traditional gallery spaces. In the Rockaways, that mission took an especially direct form: artists making work in a public place, alongside the people already there.
