PEDRO RAMÍREZ VÁZQUEZ

Pedro Ramírez Vázquez was one of the most influential architects of twentieth-century Mexico. His work captured the balance between modern design and Mexican cultural identity. Born in 1919, he became known for creating buildings that combined functionality with national pride. Throughout his career, he designed museums, public buildings, and sports venues that emphasized monumental forms and expansive public spaces while celebrating Mexico’s history and traditions. His vision helped shape the modern image of Mexico City, especially during the preparations for the 1968 Olympic Games.

THE STADIUM

One of his greatest achievements was the stadium originally inaugurated as Estadio Azteca in 1966. Over time, it came to be known as El Coloso de Santa Úrsula, in reference to the area of Mexico City where it stands. The stadium is especially remarkable for its innovative engineering, immense capacity, and the way it was partially integrated into the natural landscape, reducing the visual impact of a structure of such monumental scale. This design also improved accessibility and crowd movement, making it one of the most functional sports venues of its era. More importantly, the stadium became a symbol of Mexican modernity and national pride.
