Casa Dragones’s Three-Part Día de Muertos

From San Miguel de Allende to Napa Valley, here’s how Casa Dragones celebrated.

Día de Muertos came and went in a flourish of marigolds. To celebrate this meaningful holiday, we hosted a series of special pairing dinners—from our spiritual hometown of San Miguel de Allende to aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train.

F39T7548

In San Miguel de Allende, the pinnacle of the week was an intimate Pairing Table dinner at La Casa Dragones, featuring guest chefs Clare de Boer, Jess Shadbolt, and Annie Shi-McGregor of the New York restaurant King.

king chefs

Sourcing from all local ingredients, they prepared a six-course menu that paired entirely with Casa Dragones Joven. As evening fell, the dinner became a grand cocktail party with a live performance from The Mexican Standoff and sets from DJ Itai and DJ Alonso Rivera. Our bartender-in-residence, Luis Franklin Hernandez of KO MA, served up craft cocktails in style (recipes here and here).

F39T6725

Another night in San Miguel, we joined Hotel Matilda and Moxi restaurant for their annual La Cena Negra (Black Dinner). This was a feast for all senses, and meal pairings went beyond taste and smell. Each of the six courses was meticulously set with a Mexican folk song specifically for Día de Muertos, as well as a beverage. Chef Gabriela Ruiz Lugo of Mexico City’s Carmela y Sal married black mole with suckling pig confit and pickled vegetables with Tequila Casa Dragones Joven and a rendition “La Llorona” by Chavela Vargas.

altar

Back at La Casa Dragones, Guadalajara-based artist Marco Rountree designed a special altar that enveloped the entire entryway—an offering to our namesake, the Dragones cavalry, who helped lead Mexico to its independence in the 1800s. Marco described the installation as a “small universe of Mexican elements,” among them: sculptures he made that recall Mexican traditions and handcrafts, painted tortillas, anafres, clay figurines, ceramic vegetables, objects wrapped into concrete, and, of course, a portrait of Ignacio Allende himself. Eclectic, beautifully crafted, and lighthearted, this altar is a token of our gratitude.

altal detail2

And more than 2000 miles away, in Napa Valley, we teamed up with Napa Valley Wine Train to bring the valley a taste of an authentically Mexican Día de Muertos celebration. Chef Luis Arellano of Oaxaca restaurant Criollo served a an exquisite four-course, Casa Dragones Joven–paired meal aboard the scenic sunset ride. Guests enjoyed Dragones Rocks and the Stumblebee cocktail before sitting down to dinner.

Thank you to all our partners and friends who joined our Día de Muertos festivities this year—and cheers to many more to come!

Paired for the senses: Experience something new with Casa Dragones Joven and oysters

what (and when) is oyster season, and how can you get creative with enjoying it?

casa-dragones_oysters

Legend has it that oysters are best enjoyed September through April (also known as the “r” months). We did a little research and debunked this myth, discovering that now—thanks to cold-water oyster farms and modern refrigeration—every season is a perfectly fine oyster season. And there’s no more decadent a way to enjoy good oysters than with a flute of Casa Dragones Joven.

Ideally, oysters are firm and lean in texture, and briny in taste. The emerging flavors, depending on the oyster, can span sweet, earthy, and mineral tones. They’re best straight out of cold water and eaten from the shell immediately after being shucked, or plucked straight off a raw bar. Any beverage accompanying an oyster should not overpower its distinct flavor, making Joven the perfect complement. The master blend of 100% blue agave silver and extra aged tequila has a complex yet subtle flavor that beautifully balances the minerality of these all-season delicacies.

Upon tasting Casa Dragones Joven, chef Elena Reygadas recalls she was “surprised because of its elegance and subtlety.” Accordingly, she crafted an exquisite dish of Kumiai oysters to pair with the Joven for her Mexico City restaurant, Rosetta. The sweet, creamy notes in the oysters beautifully matched the Joven’s own subtle sweetness. Chef Darren Walsh of Lula Bistro in Guadalajara once creatively paired Joven with extra-large oysters topped with smoked shallot and bacon chutney, bacon panna cotta, and watermelon pearls, while José restaurant in Dallas has served Joven with smoky, grilled oysters for added depth.

While chefs have had their fun with the pairing, it’s simple enough to take into your own hands. Take notes, perhaps, from chef Gustavo Pinet of Crudo Bar at The Resort in Pedegral, who has served Joven with oysters accompanied with mignonettes such as grilled pineapple pico de gallo and spicy sesame oil and a mint ponzu sauce, cucumber, and red onion. Get creative with it, or pare back with a more standard mignonette and let you flute of Joven do the work.

How to Host the Most Memorable Summertime Celebration

Your go-to guide for inspiration, with tips from expert entertainers for any summertime celebration

The long days of summer call for adventure, relaxation, and spending quality time with quality people. When you’re playing host for any gathering—whether it’s an all-out dinner party or just a casual afternoon get-together with close friends—a few subtle details can make it all the more memorable. We’ve put together a no-fuss guide inspired by a few of our favorite hosts so you can entertain with elegance and thoughtfulness, no matter the occasion.

summertime celebration
summertime celebration
1. Set the Scene

Making an impression is all about the details. Get creative with the color scheme and express it through florals or a tablescape. For a party Laura Vinroot Poole hosted in honor of her friend Irene Neuwirth, she decorated the scene with colors inspired by Neuwirth’s opalescent jewelry line. If you’re going for a themed occasion, look to Sasha Bickoff’s sea-inspired fête (above) which included seashell motifs, a seafood-driven menu, and festive specialty cocktails (on-theme attire not pictured). Go the extra mile and fix up an easy raw bar with oysters, which pair exquisitely with Casa Dragones Joven.

summertime celebration

2. Make it Personal

Handwritten name cards are a simple yet thoughtful touch to make the dining table more welcoming. For an extra-special gathering, consider a personalized, hand-signed bottle of Casa Dragones Joven to perfectly commemorate the occasion.

summertime celebration

3. Brighten the Mood

The right lighting can transform an atmosphere. According to entertaining expert (and Instagram icon) Athena Calderone, candlelight is the most flattering, but for the right space, stringing twinkling lights overhead can make for an equally cozy and picturesque setup. For the DIY-inclined, take notes from New York–based event planner Sam Masters, who creatively adorned paper lanterns with tassels and fringe for a Chinatown-inspired dinner party for textiles brand Voutsa in Manhattan.

summertime celebration

4. Have a Well-equipped Bar

And that means stocking beautiful glassware and accessories as much as it does quality spirits (we love our set of Christofle crystal tumblers, above). When guests arrive, greet them with a refreshing drink. A simple Dragones Rocks makes for an elegant and warm welcome. Plus, it means you won’t be stuck messing with fancy garnishes, cocktail shakers, or sticky counters.

summertime celebration

5. Serve Festive Drinks

Good libations are key. For a larger get-together, consider hiring a bartender and give our cocktail recipe collection a visit when planning the menu (best to let a pro handle the more intricate recipes in there, anyway). If you’re playing mixologist, try an easily batch-able cocktail such as the Marquis Margarita or Oprah’s favorite, the Pink Panther.

summertime celebration

6. Make a Seasonal Menu

Athena Calderone recommends going the simple route with hearty one-pot or make-ahead meals (think: a seasonal salad or a braised meat dish that can be made the night before). Or for an elevated dining experience, impress your guests with a menu or single course paired with Casa Dragones Joven for a culinary experience that fully immerses the senses. Peruse our library of chef pairings for inspiration.

Bonus tip: If you’re on the other end of an invitation, don’t forget a thoughtful token of gratitude for the host. Consider the Casa Dragones Blanco half bottle for its portable size and gift-ready box.

The Real Story of Cinco de Mayo

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo does not mark the day of Mexican Independence

Casa Dragones Cinco de Mayo Story

This unofficial holiday actually marks a Mexican victory at the battle of Puebla, Mexico, in the 19th century against the French army, a day not even recognized by the federal Mexican government. The small town of Puebla is one of the only places in Mexico where this day is celebrated. There, they convene and hit the streets with parades and reenactments in honor of the battle. But it became popular in the United States for another reason.

Cinco de Mayo began to gain popularity as a day of celebration in the 1960s, as Mexican-American activists raised public interest in a holiday that celebrated Mexican culture. In time, it became a holiday of fun and an exciting and exuberant way to usher in the summer’s arrival.

So what is the full story behind everyone’s favorite day of celebration?

Mexico’s tenuous political relationship with Spain, Britain, and France reached a climax in 1862. Mexico owed these European countries a significant amount of money from years of accrued debt, and while Spain and Britain removed their navies from the gulf of Mexico, France decided it was time to make a power play. They landed and began an invasion on the Central American mainland, pushing the Mexican army to the northern border to their American neighbor who was occupied fighting their own Civil War.

In the small town of Puebla, the Mexican army was outnumbered and outmatched. By what seemed like a miracle and by a series of strategic moves, they held off Napoleon III and the French army, pushing them back. Word reached Mexican immigrants in the United States weeks later, resulting in a symbolic victory both on the battlefield and in the hearts of those who called Mexico their home. Although the battle was small, and it would be several years until France fully retreated from Mexico, this victory captured the Mexican spirit of independence and resilience.

For Cinco de Mayo this year, enjoy a full Saturday of fun by drinking Dragones Blanco on the rocks, sipping Casa Dragones Joven with an inspired pairing dish, or by celebrating with a Cinco-inspired cocktail to enjoy with family and friends.

Cinco de Mayo vs Mexican Independence Day

What is the difference between Mexican Independence Day and Cinco de Mayo?

Food, music and dance may be common associations with Mexican celebrations, but it’s a popular misconception that the holiday Cinco de Mayo is the official celebration of Mexican Independence. The truth is, Cinco de Mayo marks Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.

Cinco de Mayo has taken on greater significance in the U.S as a day to honor Mexican culture. The holiday provides an opportunity for many to connect with the spirit of Mexican, traditional food, music and of course, tequila. But don’t stow away the fireworks, as celebrating Mexican heritage continues throughout the year.

Mexican Independence Day, known to Mexicans as El Grito, on September 16, commemorates the start of the Mexican War of Independence from Spain—a fight that would continue through September 1821. This is the most significant day for Mexicans, which embodies their pride for their home country. Casa Dragones honors this date with a “16” on our label.

With celebrations all over the country this year for both Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independance Day, take a little time to raise a glass of Tequila Casa Dragones and say “Salud”, to a true Mexican tequila when acknowledging the nation’s vibrant history.

Signature Cocktails at Bentley’s Mexico or Bust Fundraiser

To support a new documentary called “Mexico or Bust,” – named after a nonprofit which teaches students valuable skills required to master car mechanics – Bentley Motors hosted an elegant fundraiser. Held at the Classic Car Club Manhattan, the event kicked off with cocktails by Casa Dragones Blanco, passed hors d’oeuvres, a live auction, and culminated with the official unveiling of Bentley’s newest model vehicle.

Cocktails by Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco

Guests were treated to a brightly colored signature cocktail created by Adam Baca of La Esquina NY. Named after the nonprofit itself, Baca’s “Mexico or Bust” cocktail featured Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco, fresh lime juice, a puree of prickly pear and lavender. To capture the perfect balance of spice and sweetness, the cocktail is finished off with a chili-arbol infused honey.

The Carrera Panamericana & Bentley Motors

At the core of this fundraiser is the fact that Bentley Motors donated a vehicle model to Mexico or Bust which the organization will use to create hands-on learning experiences for their students as they build a completed, working Bentley vehicle. The finished product will then be entered into the Carrera Panamericana tour race which rolls throughout the the hills of central Mexico, and even stops in the spiritual home of Tequila Casa Dragones – San Miguel de Allende. This will be the very first time for Bentley Motors to participate in this race, and is made even more meaningful by the fact that their entered vehicle will have been built and maintained entirely by the students of Mexico or Bust.

VIP guests, honorees and donors were able to enjoy Tequila Casa Dragones Joven during a special dinner before joining the rest of the event’s over 200 attendees downstairs for cocktails featuring Casa Dragones Blanco, a silent auction, award ceremony and finally, a live auction which included two one-of-a-kind Casa Dragones Joven bottles created by artist Rob Pruitt.

Just under 50 VIP guests began the evening early with an outstanding 4 course dinner provided by Peter Callahan Catering on the second floor of Stephen Weiss Studio. Before the first course was served, dinner guests raised glasses of Tequila Casa Dragones Joven in a toast to RxArt, to the evening’s honorees, and to many more years of making a difference in children’s hospitals by helping them to heal through the power of visual art.

After dinner, guests moved downstairs into the studio’s main space for cocktails featuring Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco on the rocks, or in the signature craft cocktail, the “Cuerpo de Cielo” – an original recipe by mixologist Ulysses Vidal of Employees Only. During cocktails guests mingled throughout the venue’s main exhibition space while browsing through displayed auction items and placing bids.

Later, Jenna Lyons of J.Crew took the stage to present this year’s Inspiration Award to artist Rob Pruitt, followed by Neil Blumenthal of Warby Parker who introduced this year’s Innovation Award Winner, TJ Parker. After hearing from the event’s guests of honor, Sara Friedlander, Vice President of Sales at Christie’s steered the event into the night’s main attraction – the live auction. This year’s auction included donated pieces of contemporary art with everything from paintings, to sculptures and even full installation pieces. This year’s list of items also included two completely one-of-a-kind bottles of Tequila Casa Dragones with unique motifs by artist and honoree, Rob Pruitt.

Celebrating Gloria Cortina’s New Line With Casa Dragones Blanco Cocktails

Tequila Casa Dragones was proud to support Mexican designer Gloria Cortina at the opening night of her first solo exhibition, by pouring the unique Casa Dragones Blanco signature craft cocktail which was inspired by her own design work. The cocktail, aptly named “The Obsidian,” was originally created by mixologist Rael Petit who drew its inspiration from the shimmering black tiles of obsidian that cover the walls and ceiling of Casa Dragones Tasting Room in San Miguel de Allende and were conceptualized and facilitated by Gloria Cortina herself.

Unveiled in Manhattan’s Cristina Grajales Gallery, the exhibition’s opening night drew over 100 guests including Laura Raicovich, head of the Queens Museum, designer Sebastian Errazuriz, and Collective Design Fair Founder Steven Learner to enjoy cocktails while weaving in and out of Cortina’s new furniture line, “From Within.” The line features glistening pieces of furniture created primarily from black, bronze, silver and gold obsidian, as well as nickel, brass, quartz and purple cochinilla lacquer. Many of the pieces are polished and hammered into shape by hand, and each reflect Cortina’s fascination with Mexican heritage.

The choice to incorporate obsidian – a naturally occurring glass-like rock common to various parts of Mexico – and cochinilla lacquer which gets its purple coloring from the Cochineal insect showcases Cortina’s deep fascination with Mexican heritage and culture as both materials were also commonly used by the Aztecs. Casa Dragones Joins Opening of Jose Dávila’s New Exhibit at Sean Kelly Gallery

Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco was served during the opening night reception in honor of Mexican artist, Jose Dávila’s new exhibit featured in Manhattan’s Sean Kelly Gallery. Friends and patrons of the Sean Kelly Gallery, as well as guests of the artist himself celebrated the official opening of “Stones Don’t Move” with an evening of cocktails and a light dinner provided by New York City’s La Sirena restaurant.

During cocktails, guests strolled through all three of the gallery’s exhibit spaces to see Dávila’s signature photographic cutouts, paintings and sculptures while enjoying glasses of Casa Dragones Blanco on the rocks, or in the signature craft cocktail, “El Diablo.” After dinner but before parting ways for the evening, guests were treated to a live performance by a 10 piece mariachi band who filled the halls of the Sean Kelly Gallery with the distinctive sounds of traditional Mexican music.

The exhibit, designed as an exploration into the ways in which the modernist movement is continually interpreted and reinvented, includes an examination of architecture, traditional art history and mathematical geometry. Read more about the details of his exhibit here.

“2 Chefs” Dinner Series by chefs, Ludo Lefebvre and Jorge Vallejo

The most recent dinner of the “2 Chefs” series hosted by Trois Mec in Los Angeles took place on October 26th and featured a sweet and savory dessert paired specifically with Tequila Casa Dragones Joven. Two internationally renowned chefs, French native and local chef of Trois Mec, Ludo Lefebvre joined forces with chef Jorge Vallejo of Mexico City’s Quintoil restaurant – #12 of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2016. Together, the chefs created an elaborate six course dinner served to over 50 guests in what can only be described as a culinary experience of epic proportions.

Each chef took ownership of three individual dishes, that were part of the larger six course menu. Because of Trois Mec’s open floor plan that allows full view into the kitchen from the dining room, the evening’s dinner guests were able to experience much more than just the dishes in front of them, as they could watch, listen, and interact with the chefs while they prepared the night’s dishes. The night’s sixth and final course was a sweet and savory rice pudding with twist of lime that was paired with a glass of Tequila Casa Dragones Joven which balanced the sharp citrus of the lime with the tequila’s delicate notes of pear and hints of vanilla.

Tane and Maestro Felguérez Highlight Excellence in Mexican Craftsmanship

Every year since 1974, the outstanding silversmiths at Tane, a luxury jeweler in Mexico, produce a single piece of unique artwork that is born out of a collaborative partnership with a renowned artist. This year, Tane partnered with Maestro Manuel Felguérez, a prominent Mexican abstract artist known for his influential role in the Generación de la Ruptura which broke away from the muralist movement championed by Diego Rivera during the mid 20th Century.

This year’s piece, an abstract design conceptualized by Maestro Felguérez and executed by the talented Tane silversmiths, features individual impeccably crafted pieces of pure silver arranged into a one-of-a-kind 45 centimeter composition that is both narrow and vertical.

To honor the launch of this year’s collaboration, Tane hosted an intimate lunch for 45 guests prepared by chef Jorge Vallejos at Quintonil (#12 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants) in Mexico City. While finding their seats, guests enjoyed a craft cocktail featuring Casa Dragones Blanco aptly named, Agua de Quintonil before the meal’s first course was served. The afternoon’s marquee entree was a colorful dish of Escamoles paired with Casa Dragones Joven, and lead Maestro Felguérez to remark that “this is a tequila that you just have to drink with real connoisseurs,” before guests parted ways after lunch.

For years, Tane has been maintained its reputation for “silversmith work that is completely devoted to the pursuit of perfection,” – a declaration that was most certainly solidified through this year’s collaboration with Maestro Felguérez.

Guests attending the Taste of Mexico event at The Mexican Cultural Institute of DC were treated to an intimate seated dinner and spirit pairing experience led by top Mexican sommelier Sandra Fernández and award-winning Mexican chef, Pati Jinich.

The culinary masterminds collaborated on a detailed menu that consisted of four individual dishes paired with a specific spirit selected by Sandra Fernández. Casa Dragones Joven was selected as the pairing of choice for the evening’s fifth and final dessert course – a light torta de cielo with sweet pumpkin seed ice cream and brittle.

Situated beneath a stately chandelier in The Mexican Cultural Institute’s banquet hall, the evening’s aesthetics and table decorations reflected the bright, dynamic characteristics of Mexican culture. Elegant wooden chairs with vibrant purple cushions surrounded one long table covered by a decorative tablecloth made of orange and red layers cut into the shape of autumn leaves.

Overall, the evening was a perfect visual and sensory experience to usher in the fall season and to explore the unique pairing of Casa Dragones Joven with an innovative dessert created by two of Mexico’s most talented culinary minds.

Frieze Magazine Celebrates its 25th Anniversary in London

Frieze Magazine marked its 25th Anniversary with a celebration at Brasserie Zedel, a Parisian style restaurant in the heart of London’s chic Soho neighborhood. As the evening kicked off, members of the contemporary art world including artists and collectors gathered beneath the restaurant’s lofty ceilings and mingled throughout the dining room’s stately marble columns before settling in for a night of dinner and dancing.

While designed to celebrate Frieze Magazine’s 25th year, the evening was largely in part a congratulatory dinner in honor of the magazine’s Co-Publishers, Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp. In addition to guiding the Magazine’s publications and operational success, the duo also serve as Co-Directors of the annual Frieze Art Fair. Following the final course of dinner, guests were served glasses of Casa Dragones Joven with their dessert before moving into a second room for music and dancing.

Pairing Dinner by Chef Matteo Salas to Celebrate Casa Dragones Tasting Room’s Opening

Mexican chef Matteo Salas prepared a beautiful 5 course Pairing Table Dinner to culminate the official opening celebrations of Casa Dragones Tasting Room. The meal, served to a group of 30 guests seated together at a tastefully rustic wooden table, included an array of dishes that were designed to pair perfectly with Tequila Casa Dragones Joven. Held in a recently converted portion of the Dos Casas Hotel, this celebratory Pairing Table Dinner was the very first event to take place in what has been named the “Dos Casas Garage,” and proved itself to be a minimalistic and innovative event space.

After each guest had taken their seat around the table, the first of Salas’ two cold dishes were served. Plates with creamy oysters topped with scallions and pickled beets were placed at each setting, and the evening’s meal was officially underway. Oysters have become a favorite amongst chefs who pair their meals with Casa Dragones Joven as the lingering saltiness from the ocean and texture of the meat balance well with the soft notes of pear that can be detected in Casa Dragones Joven. To harmonize with the 100% Blue Agave Tequila, Salas’ next dish included tender tuna belly served with sea urchin, capers, avocado and citrus.

As guests finished the last of the evening’s cold plates, Salas switched gears and prepared to plate the first of the night’s warm dishes. His third and final seafood dish included squid prepared in toasted butter and lemon before moving on to the night’s main entree of crispy pork with swiss chard, sweet potatoes and gastrique. His fifth and final dish was a dessert plate in which he treated guests to a lemon, coconut and vanilla burnt meringue.

Exploring What It Means to Be Human at John Wolf’s “Human Condition” Opening

“Human Condition,” an immersive and site-specific art exhibition curated by renowned art advisor John Wolf, held an intimate opening night reception in Los Angeles, CA. Sprawling throughout over 40,000 square feet of the former Los Angeles Metropolitan Medical Center, the exhibit features work by over 80 artists, with each piece designed to re-contextualize the hospital’s history through an exploration into what it means to be human. Guests mingled and strolled through the former hospital’s hallways while taking in the exhibit’s artwork for the first time.

During the event, Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco was served either on the rocks or in a specialty cocktail called the “Dragones Tincture.” This particular craft cocktail brought the presence of autumn to sunny Los Angeles through its subtle notes of pear and soft citrus, while the awareness of Halloween’s proximity was heightened by a costumed waitstaff clad in hospital scrubs.

The Story of Terroir Through The Walls of Casa Dragones Tasting Room

The Story of Terroir Through The Walls of Casa Dragones Tasting Room

Like many seemingly small aspects of the architectural details found throughout Casa Dragones Tasting Room, the shimmering black tiles used to envelop the walls have a story of their own. The story of these tiles, and of how they came into existence begins in the same place as our tequila – the soil of our agave fields in Tequila, Jalisco.

The fields’ precise location deep in the heart of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt means that the soil in which the agaves grow is incredibly unique, nutrient rich, and ripe with minerals including obsidian – a black, glasslike volcanic rock formed by lava. Esteemed Mexican interior designer, Gloria Cortina and the Casa Dragones team recognized the inherent beauty in these raw black obsidian rocks and decided to incorporate them into Casa Dragones Tasting Room.

First, the obsidian rocks themselves needed to be collected from the agave fields in Tequila, Jalisco. Once enough rocks had been unearthed from the soil, the labor intensive process of transforming the raw volcanic material into 4,000 perfectly cut stone tiles could begin.

Cortina described the demanding task of creating these tiles as particularly difficult because the obsidian is “extremely fragile and must be worked properly to reflect all of its natural beauty and characteristics, so crafting 4,000 tiles was a very complex and delicate endeavor.” It was, however, an endeavor worth undertaking.

Now, those obsidian tiles adorn Casa Dragones Tasting Room’s walls as a constant reflection of the terroir from which Tequila Casa Dragones originates from, with “the heart of the land” embedded throughout the walls. But perhaps most importantly, and as noted by Cortina, “it’s brought to its most sublime presentation by Mexican hands.” Throughout the space, hues of yellow and gold shimmer across the copper bar and shelves, reflecting back in glimmers of orange and silver hues as they bounce off the deep black tiles coating the walls and ceiling.

Announcing The Opening of Casa Dragones Tasting Room

Tequila Casa Dragones is pleased to announce the opening of Casa Dragones Tasting Room in our hometown of San Miguel de Allende, México. Guests can now make reservations to visit the six-seat destination for an intimate experience with Casa Dragones Joven and Casa Dragones Blanco. The design, architecture and acute attention to detail found throughout the Tasting Room showcases our ongoing commitment to Mexican craftsmanship as well our deep connection to our terroir.

Co-Founder and CEO Bertha Gonzalez Nieves explained that the vision for Casa Dragones Tasting Room has always been “to express our love of the craft as a modern tequila producer and our commitment to showcasing Mexican craftsmanship.” In order to breathe life into that vision, Tequila Casa Dragones collaborated with the internationally acclaimed firm Meyer Davis, known for their made to measure approach to design and architecture, to create the intimate Tasting Room, which showcases Casa Dragones’ ongoing commitment to Mexican craftsmanship.

The inspiration for the Tasting Room stemmed from a deep-seated desire to provide guests a transportive, sensory experience of our sipping tequila and its terroir. The terroir has been incorporated into the space through the use of obsidian, the iconic Mexican stone found in the Casa Dragones agave fields. Esteemed Mexican designer Gloria Cortina lent her expertise in transforming natural obsidian rocks into the 4,000 tiles which Meyer Davis then used to adorn the walls and ceiling of the Tasting Room.

In describing the completed space, Will Meyer of Meyer Davis explained that “The Casa Dragones Tasting Room is a multilayered homage to tradition and ceremony and a celebration of excellence in craftsmanship.” He further added that “The architecture literally embodies the essence of Casa Dragones and offers an experiential understanding of the importance of the product.”

Introducing Hawaii’s International Polo Scene with Tequila Casa Dragones

This year, Hawaii Polo Life’s Jaguar vs. Land Rover Tournament drew the absolute apex of international polo talent to Honolulu for an afternoon of competition, cocktails, food, and excitement. As the event’s featured Tequila, Casa Dragones was proud to serve an elegant crowd of over 350 guests alongside our fellow attendees including Neiman Marcus and Cartier.

Players from all over the world including Mexico, Argentina and the United States clashed on the field in a fierce competition of athleticism and horsemanship. After a tight match, the four players of Team Jaguar eventually came away with the day’s trophy upon beating Team Land Rover by a final score of 7-6.

To some, Hawaii may seem like an unusual spot for a top-tiered international polo event, as the mind tends to immediately gravitate towards sports like surfing. Interestingly enough though, the sport actually has roots that run incredibly deep into the island nation’s history. The sport has been played across the island chain since the 1880’s when Hawaii was still a kingdom, and has maintained its presence throughout aspects of the nation’s culture ever since. Designed to celebrate just that, Hawaii Polo Life’s clothing line represents the fusion of Hawaiian heritage, polo culture, and their unique location in the Pacific Ocean.

A Feast for All the Senses: Kurimanzutto Comes to San Francisco

We were thrilled to be a part of a big night for our friends from the Kurimanzutto Gallery from Mexico City as they opened a group exhibition at the Jessica Silverman Gallery in San Francisco.

Titled ‘from here to there’, the show includes works by sixteen celebrated Mexican artists, including Gabriel Orozco, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Dr. Lakra, Jonathan Hernández and Gabriel Kuri. The exhibit is extremely exciting for both galleries: the Kurimanzutto Gallery is world-renowned and the Jessica Silverman gallery has played host to many emerging artists whose pieces have been acquired by the likes of the Tate in London, MoMA The Museum of Modern Art, and Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.

The scale of the opening attracted an incredible crowd, including Jessica Silverman herself and José Kuri, owner of Kurimanzutto. As well as the inspiring company and inspirational art of offer, guests were treated to bespoke, themed cocktails created with Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco. Dinner was served at the beautiful, bright Cala restaurant, the first U.S. restaurant from talented Chef Gabriela Cámara of Contramar, Mexico City, fame.

The evening was informative, interesting and inspiring – it was a true pleasure to be in the company of such creative talent from the ever-changing, ever-exciting worlds of modern art and fine dining.

Celebrate Mexico’s Independence

Many people are familiar with the story of Hidalgo and Mexican Independence Day of 1810. But little is known of the men who helped spark that movement in the late 1700’s. At that time, San Miguel de Allende was situated at the crossroads of the lucrative silver trade in Mexico. The Dragones of San Miguel, an elite cavalry of the Queen’s army who had been in Mexico for four generations, garnered much influence and power in business and trade throughout the region. The Dragones eventually formed alliances with influential leaders in the church, including Hildalgo, to seek independence from Spain. General Ignacio Allende, head of the cavalry and leader of the Dragones, worked closely with Hidalgo to spark the movement of Mexican Independence. On September 15th, 1810, Hidalgo notoriously rang the bell and exclaimed El Grito! marking the beginning of Mexico’s Independence Movement.

Today, 205 years later, Tequila Casa Dragones is inspired by this remarkable history. This year, celebrate your spirit of independence on September 15th by serving Casa Dragones Joven at your dinner party or as an elegant toast. Viva Mexico!

Mexico Meets New York City

This month, New York City’s Please Don’t Tell (PDT), widely known as one of the best cocktail bars in the United States, welcomed one of Mexico’s premier mixologists, Oscar Valle, for an unprecedented collaboration of creativity with Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco.

In recognition of his contribution to Mexican mixology, Oscar Valle, lead bartender at Mexico City’s Limantour Roma, was invited to join PDT’s Jeff Bell, one of four finalists for American Bartender of the Year, to craft signature cocktails inspired by Mexican motifs, exclusively with Casa Dragones Blanco.

The results were truly astonishing. Bringing the spirit of Mexico to PDT, the bar recognized in 2011 by Drinks International as the World’s Best Cocktail Bar, Valle and Bell developed three signature Casa Dragones Blanco cocktails: the Cupaima, with ancho reyes liquor and nopal bitters, Green Soup with parsley, sherry and lime juice, and Cielo Rojo with hibiscus, mole bitters and grasshoppers!

With one location in Roma Norte and another in Polanco, Limantour celebrates five years as one of Mexico City’s leading cocktail bars, having gained international acclaim when it earned the 47th spot on “The World’s 50 Best Bars Awards” ‘list in 2014. Please Don’t Tell (PDT) maintains its presence as one of the world’s most famous bars by keeping its location a secret.

The Jamming Sessions: Miami

Last week, Casa Dragones Blanco held its first Miami Jamming Session at The Rum Line at Loews Miami Beach, hosted by The Rum Line’s master mixologist Rob Ferrara, who greeted guests with his delicious “Mi Casa es Su Casa” cocktail. Previous Jamming Sessions were in San Miguel de Allende and New York.

Casa Dragones Jamming Sessions invite industry experts to jam together, spontaneously creating one-of-a-kind, signature cocktails using fresh local ingredients. During the Miami Jamming Session, five of Miami’s top mixologists competed against one another for the best Casa Dragones Blanco signature cocktail.

The competition began with Gui from The Broken Shaker, who created the “A Rose By Any Other Name” cocktail inspired by the tasting notes of Casa Dragones Blanco. Next up was Anna from Coyo Taco who crafted the ”Anna Bananna Paleta Rita,” a fun and playful fusion of Casa Dragones Blanco and a lemon popsicle. The second group included Bryan of Bodega who made the“Pico y Picante” and Richard of Prime Fish who made the “Dragon Slayer,” inspired by the hot and humid Miami weather. The last contestant was Isaac of Repour with the winning cocktail,“I’m in Love with A Mojo,” a refreshing mixture of mojito jam and coconut syrup.

The judging panel included Fred Gonzalez of The Miami Herald, Laine Doss of Miami New Times and Gio Gutierrez of ChatChow TV.

These brand new signature cocktails will each be available to taste at the participating bartenders establishments. We’re looking forward to more Casa Dragones Blanco Jamming Sessions in the near future.

Aspen After Hours

For the fifth year in a row, Casa Dragones hosted what has become one of the most highly anticipated parties of the Aspen Food & Wine Classic. Top chefs, media and industry insiders such as Michelle Bernstein, Gail Simmons, Eric Ripert, George Mendes, Michael White and Drew Nieporent gathered around a striking display of Casa Dragones Joven Sipping Tequila paired with an extraordinary selection of oysters by Caribou Club. The bright, crisp, citrus notes of Casa Dragones Joven paired beautifully with the creamy, briny flavors of the oysters, allowing guests to share in a moment of pure indulgence.

Adding to the excitement, celebrity chef Scott Conant and award-winning mixologist Jim Meehan of PDT collaborated during a jamming session, in which they joined together to create an original Casa Dragones Blanco cocktail inspired by summers on the Italian coast. A variety of specialty ingredients were provided for Conant and Meehan to spontaneously craft a cocktail featuring Casa Dragones Blanco along with aperitif, basil leaf and rosé, which they named “Miranda.”

In between taking photo booth snaps and dancing to DJ Rawdon’s music selections, guests tasted flavorful bites from the Caribou Club such as bison sliders, spicy tuna & crispy rice, lobster rolls and truffle fries.

The Importance of Ice – Part 1

The Importance of Ice – Part 1

By Jim Meehan, mixologist, James Beard Award Winner

Quite simply, a cocktail is composed of four elements: liquid, glass, ice and oftentimes a garnish. Those who prefer to savor a spirit on it’s own are faced with three of the four building blocks: either liquid and glassware alone or with ice. Many would concede the liquid as the most important element, but before writing off the other elements, it’s important to concede that we evaluate our food and drink with our eyes first.

It’s basic human instinct to appraise what we eat and drink with our sense of sight, to both ensure what we’re ingesting looks safe and enticing from an aesthetic perspective. The next sense we use is smell: to verify the absence of off-odors, and prepare our next sense; taste, for what’s to come. Most poisons have a bitter flavor, which is why we taste bitterness at the back of our tongue: before we swallow something potentially dangerous.

None of us would put something hideous or harmful in our mouth, and all of us are naturally drawn to aesthetically pleasing and aromatically inviting food and drink. While food and beverage serve as fuel to keep us alive, alcohol is something we ingest for hedonistic purposes only; either formally or casually. While the enjoyment of beer and wine benefits from service in the appropriate glassware, ice is typically reserved for the appreciation of spirits and cocktails.

From a purely functional perspective, ice cools spirits and cocktails and dilutes them as it melts. Dilution can be controlled, as it is by bartenders who shake or stir a cocktail using ice that is either withheld from the final mixture when served straight up, or poured over fresh ice, which will continue to keep the mixture cool, but further dilutes it as it sits. The addition of water through dilution makes a spirit more quaffable, and brings out flavor nuances that are undetectable at full strength.

The aroma and flavor of a cocktail or spirit varies based on the temperature and strength which it’s served, which is why neat spirits are so powerful: at full strength, the warmer they are: the more volatile their aroma.  Spirits connoisseurs tend to prefer to sip their spirits neat, with a splash of water, or over ice; but the size and quality of the ice was rarely taken into consideration in the West until recently.

Stay tuned for The Importance of Ice – Part 2 as Jim Meehan talks about the history of ice in Japan.

The Importance of Ice – Part 2

By Jim Meehan, mixologist, James Beard award winner

In Japan, ice is delivered in blocks and cut by hand before service: commercial ice makers are seldom employed in bars. Each piece is transferred from a freezer to a hinoki wood bowl to allow it to temper (warm up so it doesn’t crack when it’s combined with room temperature liquids) and defrost before service. Cocktails and spirits (mainly whisky) are served over hand-carved spheres, crystal clear cubes, and even diamonds in traditional cocktail bars.

Following in the footsteps of Japanese bartenders who’ve mopped up international cocktail competitions and garnered thousands of views on YouTube, dozens of bars across the U.S. have invested in Clinebell ice machines, which ice sculptors rely on to produce large clear blocks of ice to cut down into cubes and spears for long drinks. Besides their jewel-like beauty, clear blocks of ice melt more slowly than cloudy ice so you can savor your drink before dilution claims it’s character.

In the video, you’ll see second-generation ice sculptor Shintaro Okamoto breaking down 300 pound blocks of ice into clear cubes, spears and spheres for local bars and restaurants such as PDT and Gramercy Tavern. Don Lee, who founded the bar program at Momofuku, urged Okamoto to develop a service for bars back in 2009, and clear ice has become standard in top cocktail bars in New York City ever since.

Most of us lack the time, space and resources that the countries top cocktail bars and ice studios have allocated for ice, but fret not: you can make nearly perfect ice at home. Online stores and shops dedicated to cocktails, such as Cocktail Kingdom, sell molds for cubes, spears and spheres, along with tappers, mallets, ice bags and picks to prepare pro-quality ice for drinks in your home.

Stay tuned for the last installment of James Beard award winning mixologist Jim Meehan’s The Importance of Ice.

The Importance of Ice – Part 3

By Jim Meehan, mixologist, James Beard award winner

Most of us lack the time, space and resources that the countries top cocktail bars and ice studios have allocated for ice, but fret not: you can make nearly perfect ice at home.  Online stores and shops dedicated to cocktails, such as Cocktail Kingdom, sell molds for cubes, spears and spheres, along with tappers, mallets, ice bags and picks to prepare pro-quality ice for drinks in your home.

The technique is somewhat simple: cool warm filtered water (which has less gas and particular matter trapped in it than cold water from the tap) and add it to an insulated cooler.  Place the cooler in your freezer and pull it out just before it freezes all the way: the top layer will contain impurities, which would be trapped if you froze it solid, and lead to cloudy ice.

After you’ve allowed the block to temper, extract the block and break it down by scoring it along a line you’d like your cubes sized with a knife (preferably a sturdy soba or chef’s knife), followed by tapping it with a multi pronged ice pick and a rubber mallet.  If this seems excessive, you can forgo perfectly clear ice for blocks by using custom molds: set your freezer to a higher setting, as the longer it takes to freeze the water, the more gas and impurities will be displaced.

Seemingly fussy to some, think of the time and care that goes into mixing a perfectly balanced cocktail or distilling a world-class spirit: why would you compromise its integrity when it comes to presentation?  While thin-rimmed crystal tumblers and large clear cubes are associated with whisky more than any other spirit, white spirits such as Casa Dragones Blanco Tequila benefit greatly from clear ice, as the bright liquid disappears; allowing you to focus on it’s heady taste and aromatics.

Salud!

Danh Vo Special Edition

Punta della dogana – Pinault collection 2015

Casa Dragones is thrilled to announce our collaboration with the internationally acclaimed artist Danh Vo, in two Special Edition bottles designed especially for two unique exhibitions surrounding the 2015 Venice Biennale. Both Special Edition bottles feature calligraphy directed by the artist, and executed by the artist’s father, Phung Vo, whose elegant calligraphy is prevalent in Vo’s art.

According to ArtNet News, “when Danh Vo was asked to be the first artist to curate an exhibition at Venice’s Punta della Dogana (run by the Pinault Collection, as is the Palazzo Grassi), his first thought was tequila.”

To celebrate the Special Edition and the exhibition opening, Casa Dragones Joven was poured at the sensational dinner hosted by Francois Pinault in honor of the artists and curators. The dinner began with glasses of Casa Dragones being served at the magnificent Hotel Bauer, where Mexican craftsmanship met Italian sophistication while overlooking the incomparable views of the Punta Della Dogana. Late night revelry continued as artists, collectors and newly-inaugurated European tequila lovers enjoyed their first time with Casa Dragones.

The first exhibition, Vo’s Slip of the Tongue at Palazzo Grassi – Punta Della Dogana – Pinault Collection, marks the first time an artist has been selected to curate for Punta Della Dogana in Venice. The second exhibit will be at the Venice Biennale’s Danish Pavilion, where Vo is the featured artist.

For this first Special Edition, 150 Casa Dragones Joven bottles have been hand-inscribed with the exhibition title, Slip of the Tongue, uniting each untitled piece under the umbrella of Vo’s curated collection, in collaboration with curator, Caroline Bourgeois. Special Edition bottles are available in Punta Della Dogana – Pinault Collection museum store. They are also available exclusively through Casa Dragones Concierge. For information, please contact [email protected]

The origin of our collaboration is both remarkable and fitting. Danh Vo, who was born in South Vietnam and later settled in Denmark with his family in 1979, has recently chosen to reside in Mexico City, and shares a passion for Mexico that extends to Casa Dragones. We are honored and thrilled to be part of the artistic curation of the Venice Biennale 2015.

Venice Biennale 2015

Often inspired by the landscape of his locale, Danish-Vietnamese artist Danh Vo, who currently resides in Mexico, was inspired by the tradition and spirit of Casa Dragones and our shared passion for Mexican culture and the arts.

As part of his installation of mothertongue at the Danish Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia, 56th International Art Exhibition, Danh Vo deliberately places a bottle of Casa Dragones Joven Sipping Tequila on a 1949 Danish wooden table inlaid with 30 silver coins.

Casa Dragones hosted a party honoring the exhibition at the Danish Pavillion, where guests, artists and curators including Danh Vo, Suzanne Ghez, Marian Goodman, Mauricio Guillén and Rirkrit Tiravanija enjoyed Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco on the rocks.

“Danh Vo is one of the most important and innovative figures on the international art scene,” says the Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding, who selected the Vo to represent Denmark at this year’s Venice Biennale.

To celebrate this remarkable curation, Casa Dragones and Danh Vo have created a new Special Edition 56th Venice Biennale – Danish Pavilion collection. Each bottle is directed by the artist and hand-inscribed with calligraphy by the artist’s father, Phung, whose beautiful calligraphy is often present in his work.

Special Edition bottles are available for sale at the Danish Pavilion and participating galleries representing Vo’s work.  For more information, contact [email protected]

A Historic Ride Through Mexico

To kick off Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations, Casa Dragones once again joined the “Cabalgata Histórica,” one of the most unique and picturesque events in Mexico.

Beginning in Queretero and ending in San Miguel de Allende, The “Cabalgata Histórica” is a historic horseback ride commemorating the moment that Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, insurgent and supporter of the Mexican War of Independence, informed Miguel Hidalgo, Juan Aldama, and Ignacio Allende, captain of the Dragones of San Miguel, that their plans to start the movement of independence had been discovered.

Soon after, Allende, Aldama, Hidalgo and the Dragones rode on this historic path to Dolores to officially start the war of Independence with “El Grito de Independencia.”

Casa Dragones is inspired by the independent spirit of the legendary Dragones of San Miguel de Allende, paying homage to Mexican Independence Day with the “16” on each of our bottles. Learn more about the history of Casa Dragones in San Miguel de Allende here.

Top Chefs And Bartenders Aboard the Freedom Yacht

A warm, New York summer night became the ideal backdrop for our second jamming session celebrating the first batch of Casa Dragones Blanco hosted by Co-Founders Bertha González Nieves and Bob Pittman aboard the Freedom Yacht. Restored to perfection, the sister ship of the U.S.S. Sequoia Presidential Yacht is an elegant 1930’s yacht that shares our passion for craftsmanship.

Taking inspiration from musical jamming sessions, world class chefs and bartenders were teamed up to create spontaneous cocktails, using one constant ingredient: Casa Dragones Blanco. Inspired by its refined taste and crisp notes, the teams crafted innovative cocktails using fresh, seasonal produce and specialty ingredients.

Pioneers in molecular gastronomy; Mexico’s Chef Enrique Olvera of the restaurant Pujol and mixologist Dave Arnold of Booker & Dax took to the bar to craft the Cilantro Margarita; a new take on the traditional cocktail, with an innovative twist using liquid nitrogen.

Frank Falcinelli and Frank Castronovo from New York’s restaurant Frankies Spuntino and Sasha Petraske from Milk & Honey teamed up to craft the Freedom Charter, a cocktail using muddled nectarines complimented by lime juice and Aleppo pepper.

James Beard Award winner and mastermind of Please Don’t Tell (PDT), Jim Meehan joined Chef Jamie Bissonnette from Coppa to take on the traditional Rebujito, elevating it with a made on-site lemon balm syrup and sherry.

The atmosphere on board was electrifying and filled with creativity and inspiration. Guests partied into the night and enjoyed these new and unique Casa Dragones Blanco cocktails.
